Background of the Study
Financial inclusion is a critical driver of economic growth, particularly in developing countries. Union Bank of Nigeria has undertaken initiatives to improve branch accessibility as a means of enhancing financial inclusion. By upgrading physical infrastructure, expanding branch networks to underserved areas, and integrating digital self-service kiosks, the bank aims to provide easier access to financial services for a broader segment of the population (Adebayo, 2023). These efforts are designed not only to improve customer convenience but also to bridge the gap between urban and rural banking services.
The bank’s strategy involves modernizing existing branches and establishing new outlets in regions that have traditionally been excluded from formal banking. Enhanced accessibility can lead to increased deposit mobilization, higher loan uptake, and improved overall financial participation. Research indicates that when banks invest in improving branch accessibility, there is a significant positive impact on financial inclusion, as more individuals gain the opportunity to engage in banking activities (Chinonso, 2024). Additionally, the integration of digital channels with physical branches creates a hybrid model that caters to diverse customer needs, further enhancing financial inclusion.
Union Bank’s initiatives also include community outreach programs and customer education on digital banking services, ensuring that the benefits of increased branch accessibility extend beyond mere physical presence. However, challenges such as high infrastructure costs, regional disparities in technology, and varying levels of financial literacy continue to hinder the full realization of these benefits (Ifeoma, 2025). This study assesses the impact of branch accessibility improvements on financial inclusion at Union Bank of Nigeria, examining both the operational and social dimensions of the initiative.
Statement of the Problem
Despite significant efforts to improve branch accessibility, Union Bank of Nigeria faces several challenges in enhancing financial inclusion. One major issue is the high cost of infrastructure development in remote and underserved areas, which can limit the number of new branches that the bank is able to open (Adebayo, 2023). Additionally, disparities in digital infrastructure across regions mean that even upgraded branches may struggle to deliver consistent service quality, particularly in rural areas where network connectivity is poor. These issues may hinder the bank’s ability to fully integrate physical and digital banking channels.
Furthermore, varying levels of financial literacy among the target population present another challenge. Without adequate customer education, improvements in branch accessibility may not translate into increased utilization of banking services. There is also the potential for internal resistance to change, as staff may be unprepared to handle the diverse needs of a newly expanded customer base. Moreover, the lack of standardized metrics to measure the direct impact of accessibility improvements on financial inclusion complicates the evaluation process (Chinonso, 2024). These challenges underscore the need for a comprehensive assessment of the bank’s branch accessibility initiatives and their effectiveness in promoting financial inclusion.
